I’m an Artist. I’m not skilled or trained but neither am I a novice or a neophyte. Maybe you could say I’m semi-proficient or aspiring. I paint as often as possible, trying to but never catching up for lost time or opportunity. Every day It’s a journey.
I started painting in 2005 and painted 20 to 30 paintings during the next four years. It was then, that I started calling myself an artist.
Call it audacious, egotistical arrogant or just stupid but In 2010 having no art education or training and having painted only twenty or thirty paintings I decided I could teach other people to paint and opened “Paint Along Studios”. I got stupid lucky. I don’t know whether I taught anyone else to paint, but I taught myself to paint.
I operated Paint Along Studios successfully for 41/2 years. During that time, I painted with 4129 people, painting 307 example paintings in 1,033 classes. It was great.
David Collins the Kid
Born… in Sebring Ohio in 1948.
I contracted polio at five and spent seven months in rehabilitation in a polio ward at Mary Free Bed Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan. There with 50 other boys 6-10 years old we struggled to heal and be normal. Entertainers from the various arts helped lift the spirits on Saturdays. It was there that I first realized a passion for creating.
Three years of therapy and exercise prepared me for three surgical procedures that allowed me to walk without braces. I was unable to participate in sports and other physical activity so I passed time drawing, coloring, constructing and painting with water colors.
I painted a little in High School and still occasionally said, “When I grow up I’m going to be an artist”. I guess I’ve grown up.
