Tapestries Lakeland

Professional Artist

David Nelson Collins

I am a self taught, late blooming artist who started painting in 2005.  Speed is of the essence, I’m 70 years old I feel like I lost 50 years of learning and creating.  In the last few years I’ve been creating public art.  I love murals, public sculpture, performance art and other less permanent art exhibitions.  I painted a Giraffe on a tree in Munn Park, created “Clearly People” a packaging tape sculpture exhibition and masterminded “Tapestries Lakeland”. Title:  “Standing Tall”

Size:  60″ X 161″

Inspiration:

Why a Sandhill Crane? Well, I thought I should paint a majestic bird and I thought Lakelanders might throw up if they saw another painting of a swan. So please don’t stick your finger down your throat for this one.

Title:  “Jerboa atop an Alien”

Size:  84″ X 110″

Inspiration:

Well not really, it is a nocturnal jumping Jerboa but the alien is simply an ugly fish face converted to an alien coming out of a lagoon. I wanted to paint an alien and after looking at alien imagery I quickly decided that any animal looks like an alien when you give it humanoid arms and legs. It’s supposed to be absurd not scarey.

Title:  “My Daughter”

Size:  62″ X 65″

Inspiration:

It really is a portrait of my daughter “Erin”. She was at a photo shoot for the “Aerie” brand, where she is the Manager of Styling when a coworker took a photo of the Aerie models frolicking in the beach reflected on her sun glasses.

Title:  “Laughing Horses”

Size:  128″ X 110″

Inspiration:

Laughing horses, what are the laughing at? They’re probably laughing at the ridiculous inability of Congress to work together to solve the nations problems, or they may have seen my new socks. It’s Laughable, absurd, comical, funny, hilarious, risible, droll, amusing, farcical, silly, ludicrous; rarederisible, senseless, foolish, stupid, inane, fatuous, childish, puerile, half-baked, harebrained, cockamamie, ill-thought-out, crackpot and idiotic. And, I’m not talking about my socks or the mural.

The location where this tapestry will hang is currently being resurfaced and painted.  We hope to install the tapestry in the next couple of weeks.

Title:  “Women on Fire”

Size:  65″ X 84″

Inspiration:

What’s hot and what’s not constantly changes. Change comes fast add Oxygen. Puff, women are on fire.
