Title: “Persephone leaving Hades”
Size: 65″ X 84″
Inspiration:
According to mythology, Hades, god of the Underworld, fell in love with beautiful Persephone when he saw her picking flowers one day in a meadow. The god then carried her off in his chariot to live with him in the dark Underworld. In some accounts, Zeus had given his consent to the abduction. In Persephone’s absence, winter fell, and on her return, spring. Life begets death, and death begets life.
Title: “Prometheus Defying Zeus”

Inspiration:
Prometheus was infamous for handing the torch of flame to man (representing knowledge) which was against Zeus’s command. Prometheus is chained to a mountain for his punishment, a display of authority asserting itself in a grotesque and barbaric manner.

Inspiration:
Dionysus is the god of the grape-harvest, wine making and wine, of fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theater in ancient Greek religion and myth. This painting represents the madness that can come from over indulgence. About ten years worth.

Inspiration:
Poseidon is the god of the sea. This painting is an idea that nature, both inside and out, is more than capable of wiping out mankind, if provoked. So don’t litter, inside or out.
Title: “Theseus and the Minotaur”

Inspiration:
Using a ball of yarn to track his path through the labyrinth, Theseus slays the Minotaur. my interpretation is that Theseus is not a hero, but merely a man who misuses knowledge (the ball of yarn) to attack what he doesn’t understand. Theseus is a coward who kills out of fear.

Inspiration:
In response to the recent outbreak of red tide on the gulf coast, I took a look at the bigger picture of conservation, and painted a big fish.
